Honeywell’s Guide on How to Choose the Right Pressure Sensor

Today’s pressure sensors are called on to work within the harshest of environments – with the most hostile and corrosive media – or sometimes to take the simplest of pressure readings.

So, how do you select sensors that address multiple customer-specific performance requirements?

First, decide what the application for the sensor is. Then, you’ll need to ask some of these basic questions, such as, how extreme are the temperatures or corrosive nature of the media being measured? Is the environment a vibration challenge? What is the pressure range that needs to be measured in psi, bar, inches of water, etc.? How much time are you willing to devote to the integration of the sensor, or must it be ready to implement and forget? What is the pressure type (gage, absolute, differential)? How accurate does the pressure measurement need to be? And, just as important, what are the size and price constraints?

For those selecting and implementing pressure sensors into their designs, high on the list of critical features include:

  • Very low drift over time or temperature and humidity extremes
  • No need to calibrate after mounting to a PCB
  • Temperature compensated and calibrated
  • Custom calibration availability
  • An extremely tight and consistent accuracy specification
  • A wide variety of package styles and options with the same performance specifications
  • Provides a true measurement of accuracy that could be used to really evaluate, rather than having to test

INCANDESCENT Backlighting Gulping too much Battery Power?

When an application needs extended battery life, Gopher Custom Solutions (GCS) may be able to help. Our prowess in Electronic Component Distribution over the past 60+ years has been coupled with Design and Assembly skills to solve problems.

One customer, an off-road equipment manufacturer, had switch panels using incandescent backlighting, which caused high failure rates and high power consumption. Said backlighting design was also too fragile and difficult to install.

Gopher Custom Solutions (GCS) proposed green SoLiCo LED backlighting strips as a solution. These strips have an IP67 rating, making them dust and immersion protected. As solid state devices SoLiCo’s LED’s have over 50,000 hours of life and lower power consumption. GCS matched the existing harness requirements and connector pinouts to deliver a drop-in replacement. The customer now receives one part number per panel and applies them to the Point-of-Use. Problem Solved!

Cut and drill 6′ lengths of Latching Duct with unique mounting holes

Gopher Custom Solutions may also be able to help when an application demands tight-tolerance cutting and mounting and/or hole-drilling, without piles of scrap material.

An OEM’s recent processes called out the need to cut and drill 6′ lengths of Panduit Latching Duct into a myriad of smaller pieces, on the manufacturing floor. The inefficient process created bins of scrap material and extra tooling, hence an inefficient use of resources.

GCS now Kits 7 different lengths (tops and bottoms) into one package with holes drilled per each drawing. The customer receives 1 part number, not 14. Assembly Technicians receive each Kit and apply at the Point-of-Use. Value added solutions like this one increase efficiency and profitability. Problem Solved!

Gems’ flow sensing portfolio is designed for versatility and performance. It is organized into five product types. Piston types are designed for low flow rates in gases and liquids from 50 cc/min to 20 GPM, with choice of alloy or plastic housings. Shuttle models are used with high flow rates from 0.5 GPM to 100.0 GPM. Paddle models are for larger line sizes, typically 1.25″ and up. Thermal dispersion technologies feature no moving parts, making them ideal for applications where particulate matter is also a concern. Gems’ liquid level sensors provide high-reliability monitoring and detection of a wide range of fluid media. Gems offers a wide range of industrial pressure sensors. These highly visible, paddle wheel designs offer accurate visual indication, flow rate sensing and switching. Airflow Sensors
Total Error Bands (TEB) as low as ±0.25 %, allows for precise airflow measurement, often ideal for demanding applications with high accuracy requirements. Fast response time allows each design to respond quickly to airflow change, important in critical medical (e.g., anesthesia) and industrial (e.g., fume hood) applications.

Force Sensors
Low deflection helps reduce measurement error. Direct mechanical coupling of the actuation ball to the sense element reduces coupling errors and keeps mechanical hysteresis to a minimum. 20 million MCTF provides for consistent output over time and reduces repairs or replacements. Potential industrial applications include load and compression sensing, variable tension control, robotic end-effectors and wire bonding equipment.

Hall-Effect Sensors
Supply voltage as low as 2.2 Vdc, combined with very low average current of 1.8 μA typ., reduces power consumption, provides extended battery life, and promotes energy efficiency. Push-pull output does not require external pull-up resistor, simplifying interface with common electrical circuits and potentially reducing PC board space and costs. Potential applications include motion control, lid closure detection, presence-absence, metering, and displacement sensing on battery-operated and mobile equipment.

Humidity Sensors
Industry-leading long term stability minimizes system performance issues, helps support system uptime by eliminating the need to service or replace the sensor during its application life and eliminates the need to regularly re-calibrate the sensor. Liquid Level Sensors (LLE Series)
The LLE Series liquid level sensor provides a single point detection via a TTL compatible output. When liquid is present on the surface of the sensor the output sinks up to a maximum of 10mA. The LED and phototransistor chips are sealed into the base of the plastic dome in such a position that light is totally internally reflected from the dome boundary to the phototransistor.

TE Connectivity AMP Mate-N-Lok


The Mini-Universal MATE-N-LOK Connector System offers wire-to-wire and wire-to-board connections with contacts on a 4.14 mm [.163] centerline and current ratings up to 9.5 Amps max. per line. Plug and receptacle housings allow wire-to-wire and wire-to-panel configurations and header assemblies offer wire-to-board connections in vertical and right angle configurations. Wire-to-wire, free-hanging or panel mount options are available in 1-15 position in-line, dual row or matrix configurations and wire-to-board systems in dual row and matrix configurations are available in 2-24 positions. Hermaphroditic housings are also available in 2-4 positions for free-hanging applications. Crimp, snap-in pin and receptacle contacts are used to terminate 30-16 [0.05-1.2 mm2] AWG wire with insulation diameters up to 3.20 mm. The Mini-Universal MATE-N-LOK Connector System also offers a splash-proof design allowing for use in areas where high humidity, intermittent liquid splashing or foam-in applications require a sealed connector for improved electrical performance.
