SMART Position Sensors, 100° Arc Configuration Outer Diameter, SPS Series

Gopher is pleased to announce a 4th variant of the SMART Position Sensor 100° Arc Configuration from Honeywell that was originally launched in March 2011.  The new 100° Arc Configuration Outer Diameter offers the following features:

  • Measures on the outer edge of the sensor: Provides flexibility in mounting the device in the application
  • Integral amp Superseal connector with 12-inch flying lead: Provides a sealed connector with the flexibility of having flying leads
  • Regulated 5V input: Accommodates customers that have a 5V in their system.  The design can also easily be modified to accommodate a larger input voltage range

Honeywell Product Line Extension: Force Sensors, FSS, FSS-SMT, FSG Series

Wonderful news everyone, Honeywell is extending its line of FSS, FSS-SMT, and FSG force sensors with new force ranges! The new ranges include 0 to 5 N, 0 to 10 N, 0 to 15 N, and 0 to 20 N.  The sensors concentrate force from the application, through the stainless steel plunger, directly to the silicon-sensing element. The amount of resistance changes in proportion to the amount of force being applied. This change in circuit resistance results in a corresponding mV output level change.  These compact, commercial grade sensors provide reliable force sensing information, while innovative elastomeric technology and engineered molded plastics results in overforce capacities of up to three times the rated force.

COMPETITIVE OVERVIEW

There are few manufacturers that produce force sensors that compete with Honeywell’s devices.  Honeywell’s devices are unique piezoresistive offerings in the force sensor industry because they fill a niche between relatively simple strain gauges and more complex load cells. The strain gauge technology tends to be lower performing, and therefore lower cost, than Honeywell’s Force Sensor offering. This is mainly because the strain gauge is a single element, so any drift over time or temperature is more apparent than Honeywell’s technology. By placing 4 peizoresistive elements in a bridge on Honeywell’s Force Sensor, any drift tends to happen to all 4 elements equally and this tends to cancel some of the drift normally found in a single element.  While a load cell tends to be very accurate, it is also more costly than Honeywell’s Force Sensor.
